While on an episode of CNN podcast The Axe Files, John Legend says Ye’s support of Donald Trump became ‘too much’ to sustain their friendship.

John Legend still isn’t in favor of Ye supporting Donald Trump. One year after Ye called Legend a ‘sell out’ on Drink Champs, the former G.O.O.D. Music artist went to CNN podcast The Axe Files to share that the friendship between the himself and Ye hasn’t been the same in years. Host David Axelrod began by asking if Ye’s politics were “much different” than Legend’s.

“Well, you know, we aren’t friends as much as we used to be because I honestly think because we publicly disagreed on his running for office, his supporting Trump, I think it became, uh, too much for us to sustain our friendship, honestly,” the musician said. “He was upset that I didn’t support his run for presidency of the United States of America for understandable reasons.”

Axelrod responded by saying Legend “wasn’t alone” in his perception of Ye.

“I wasn’t alone in that, but, you know, he was not happy about that. And we really haven’t been close since then,” Legend responded.

“What don’t people understand about him?” Axelrod asked.

‘Well, I think people get a lot about him. I think. Um, he’s been very open with who he is and his struggles with mental health and he’s very real, honestly,’ Legend replied. “And, uh, I think what you see with him is pretty much what you get. I don’t feel like he’s a whole separate person in private than he is in public. I think you’re pretty much seeing the real Kanye publicly.”

After years of an on-an-off friendship with Trump, last November, Ye confirmed that he supports the former President.

“I’ve still got a red hat on today, I’ll let y’all know that,’ he said. ‘I might not got it on [at the moment] but I’ll let y’all know where I stand,” Ye said at the time.

Legend recently announced his eighth studio album, aptly titled Legend, which will feature Jhene Aiko, Muni Long, Jazmine Sullivan and more.
