After his set of performances at Harlem’s Apollo Theater, Drake responded to praise from Erykah Badu on Instagram.

It was a lovefest between Drake and Erykah Badu on Instagram Stories on Monday (January 23). After Drake’s career-spanning performances at Harlem’s Apollo Theater over the weekend, Badu took to her Instagram Stories where she reposted an Okayplayer review of one of Drake’s shows, which called him “the voice of a generation.”

Badu agreed with the statement, writing, “Cause he is @champagnepapi” in her caption.

Having seen the repost, Drake responded in his own Instagram Stories with “My eternal spirit animal has spoken,” followed by a set of emojis.

The Canada native threw two back-to-back Apollo Theater concerts on Saturday (January 21) and Sunday (January 22), which were originally scheduled for last year. During the shows, Drake brought out 21 Savage, Lil Uzi Vert and Harlem rap veterans Dipset, with DJ spots from Drake’s OVO Sound crew.

Drizzy has shown his love for Badu over the years, name-dropping the R&B singer in his 2019 single “Days In the East,” even surprising her son, Seven, with an appearance at his school.

On her 2015 mixtape But You Caint Use My Phone, Badu covered the rapper’s hit “Hotline Bling” on remake “Cel U Lar Device,” also using 6 God “soundalike” ItsRoutine, legal name Aubrey Davis, on the project.

In the same year, Badu talked about her friendship with Drizzy in a Complex interview.

“He liked it… we’re friends,” she said. “I don’t know how to define that. Kinda like when you have good chemistry with someone. You like the same kind of music. You like the same kind of movies… I think our friendship is a slow burn. There’s plenty of time to experiment with music and stuff.”

“I think that once I did Drake’s song, ‘Hotline Bling,’ I did it for someone’s birthday, just as a gift,” Badu added. “And it came out so well, my co-producer, Zach Witness and I, who’s on my label, we kinda just messed around with it. And you know there’s no instrumental for the song, so he had to recreate and reconfigure all these things.”
