Last week video releases from Hit-Boy, Nas, Lola Brooke, Larry June, The Alchemist and more were on our radar.
Video drops last week were plentiful. But, only a few made it to our shortlist. Hit-Boy and Nas made it to the top of our selections with “The Tide.”
Larry June and The Alchemist enlist Big Sean on “Palisades, CA” which will appear on their upcoming album The Great Escape. Lola Brooke drops off her remix to “Don’t Play With It,” and it features Latto and Yung Miami.
Freddie Gibbs emerges with a new video for “Zipper Bagz,” while E-40 releases his latest video for his single “Bands.” IDK shares his visual for “850” featuring Rich The Kid.
Victoria Monét emerges with “Smoke” her new single featuring Lucky Daye.
Hit-Boy, Nas – “The Tide”
Hit-Boy and Nas connect for “The Tide,” a leading single off of the former’s new album Surf or Drown. The wordplay on this one is supreme, and most of the clip features intimate b-roll captured during nonchalant moments intertwined with lowkey performances.
Larry June, The Alchemist, Big Sean – “Palisades, CA”
For the first time ever, Big Sean appears on a beat produced by The Alchemist, and it works. He alley-hoops his verse over the laidback production, and Larry June adds to the track too. The video is just as calm, cool and collected as the entire track.
Freddie Gibbs – “Zipper Bagz”
Freddie Gibbs’ new video for “Zipper Bagz” focuses on him aiming to clear his head by sharing his perspective. It sends a message as it’s one of the standout tracks on his album $oul $old $eparately.
Lola Brooke, Latto, Yung Miami – “Don’t Play With It (Remix)”
Lola Brooke returns with two Southern hip-hop stars, Latto and Yung Miami for the remix of her breakout single “Don’t Play With It.” Shot “run and gun” style, both of the artists attack the beat with punchlines. Latto annihilates. This was a link up that we honestly didn’t see coming.
E-40 – “Bands”
E-40 connects with his alma mater Grambling State University’s Tiger Marching Band for his new “Bands” video. To start off the visual a magnificent drone shot of the historically Black school’s football stadium is shown. The rest of the video features the rapper/producer on campus of the beloved Louisiana school.
IDK, Rich The Kid – “850 (We On Top)”
IDK’s “850 (We On Top)” video is sleek. Towards the end there’s a split screen moment that allows for Rich The Kid to insert himself into the track.
Victoria Monét, Lucky Daye – “Smoke”
For her return Victoria Monét calls up Lucky Daye to appear on “Smoke.” In the Charlie Denis-directed video, the two R&B stars offer up a nontraditional duet that leaves us wanting more from Monét. The video is a trippy experience, but it gets the job done.
