During a Hot 97 visit, Madlib revealed that he is in the process of completing the follow-up to Madvillainy, his classic collaborative album with the late MF DOOM.

Madlib has plans to release a second Madvillain album. The producer and rapper stopped by Hot 97 with Talib Kweli to promote their new Luminary album Liberation 2, sharing his thoughts on MF DOOM‘s unexpected passing and when fans will receive a follow-up to 2004’s Madvillainy.

“I found out when everybody else found out,” Madlib told co-host Peter Rosenberg about DOOM’s death in October 2020, which was later announced on New Year’s Eve. “Nobody called me or nothing, I thought it was a joke for a couple weeks. But we were in contact about a month earlier than that, so I thought I was gonna see him again.”

Luckily, Madlib said the duo have 10 songs that will likely be placed on their sophomore album. “The second one is just not complete, it’s more like a demo to me,” he said. “We didn’t piece it together or anything, and some of them, he sounds like he just did a one take and that’s it.”

While Madlib expressed that he plans on finishing the album, he also aims to change some of the beats that he ultimately used on other songs. The Oxnard native also said that the recording process for the sophomore Madvillain album began right after their 2004 debut, but that DOOM would only finish one to two songs per year at a time.

Madlib also reiterated that a full project with the late Mac Miller would arrive, titled Maclib. Miller, who died on September 7, 2018 from a drug overdose, is featured on Liberation 2 track “Right to Love Us.”
