Coachella 2023: Must-See Artists Weekend Two
The Coachella 2023 is upon us. The first weekend was last week (April 14-16) and weekend two (April 21-23) is fast approaching. The festival is known for hosting artists from various genres on multiple stages. These can range from elusive artists with devoted fans like Frank Ocean or international mega acts like Blackpink and Bad Bunny. Those having a serious case of FOMO can stream it on YouTube. Last week, we gave you a list of must-see artists. This week, we are doing the same thing and naturally, showing you even more artists that you can’t miss. We wanted to cover a range of overlapping genres and we’re confident you’ll find a few that you’ll want to catch.
Saba
Saba joins Coachella 2023 on the heels of the one-year anniversary of his album Few Good Things. This album was full of relaxing jazzy production and soulful raps from him and his collaborators. Saba’s set would be good for when you just want to catch your breath after a more energetic one. His songs are full of vulnerability and smooth delivery. Of course, you can still rap along and take part in call-and-response moments but you likely won’t be jumping around too much during his set. However, his latest single, “Back in Office” is a little more gritty than most of his usual music. Perhaps, his set will include more new songs from his upcoming project with No I.D.
Doechii
Doechii earned a spot on the Coachella 2023 lineup as one of the most exciting names on this year’s schedule. She signed with TDE in March 2022 and has been on the rise since. After her signing, she dropped a dance-based track titled “Persuasive” and followed that with “Crazy,” which further showcases his versatility. Doechii’s listeners know they can expect this type of range from her at this point. With sharp impeccable choreography, jaw-dropping outfits, and an eye-popping stage design, she made sure there was something to see and hear the entire time. Furthermore, Doechii’s catalog includes more vulnerable tracks like “Stressed” that balance out high-energy tracks like “Swamp B*tches”.
The Comet is Coming
This band came prepared to take the audience to another planet. The three-piece band may not have a lead vocalist but they don’t need one to command attention. Their songs feel like going on a space odyssey except there’s jazz music playing, and not the relaxing kind. Given the venue, it would only be appropriate to gaze into the wide sky if you’re attending Coachella 2023. The band members provide a fun and energetic performance every time, filled with swagger while still performing on their drums, keyboards, and saxophone.
Hiatus Kaiyote
Rap fans may recognize this band from their sample on Kendrick Lamar’s 2017 album, DAMN. However, they were already an established and well-known band prior to the Compton Luminary using a sample of Hiatus Kaiyote’s “Atari” on “DUCKWORTH.” The group combines elements of neo-soul, jazz, and psychedelia for a unique listening experience. Lead vocalist Nai Palm’s unmistakable voice slides through various ranges and creative delivery styles. While they are based in neo-soul, there are still moments when they can get into high-energy grooves. These are where the instrumentalists truly shine as listeners see the full power of the band’s synchronicity.
WILLOW
WILLOW truly came into her own over the years. Her sonic reinvention was evident on 2021’s Lately I Feel Everything. She released her latest album, Coping Mechanism in 2022 and dived further into this sound. WILLOW’s sound strikes chords of nostalgia nostalgic, especially with the resurgence of pop-punk. Though many might recall her entry into the music industry with “Whip My Hair,” her vocals are very much fitting for the genre but it’s her vulnerable songwriting that sets her apart. Furthermore, she comes through with incredible energy on stage. Some songs are louder and more aggressive than others. Meanwhile, her downtempo records allow her penmanship to shine. Overall, you’ll certainly find Willow’s Coachella 2023 performance to be filled with high energy, from her stage presence to the shredding guitars.
Joy Crookes
Hailing all the way from London, Joy Crookes is certainly one of the most exciting artists on the 2023 Coachella line-up. The influence of her hometown is evidenced in her songwriting. Crookes is a proud Brit and that certainly comes across in her catalog. She carries an upbeat yet relaxing presence on stage, reflected through her neo-soul influences that also combine jazz and classical elements. Dazzling visuals may not be her focus but her sound undoubtedly carries her performance; bringing a comforting and intimate feel to the festival crowd.
Dinner Party
Dinner Party is a supergroup performing at Coachella 2023 consisting of producer 9th Wonder, saxophonist Kamasi Washington, multi-instrumentalist Terrace Martin and pianist Robert Glasper. The group brings together jazz and hip-hop that draws influence from their solo discographies and expands on it. They released their latest project, Enigmatic Society on April 14, 2023, to critical acclaim. The grooves are strong and Robert Glasper regularly engages the audience. Producer 9th Wonder will often bring in various soundbites to accompany the instrumentalists. These largely include vocals from Kendrick Lamar and other artists who’ve collaborated with group members in the past. If you’re streaming this set, it might be the perfect accompaniment while you’re preparing dinner or doing some housework.
