Scrapped Ice Rink From Frank Ocean Set Used at Coachella Week Two

The ice rink planned for the Frank Ocean set found a new home during the second weekend of Coachella, albeit without the ice. On Sunday (April 23), Ocean was replaced by rock act Blink-182, followed by an EDM set including Skrillex, Fred Again…, and Four Tet. Ocean, who was only paid $4 million of the $8 million that he didn’t receive due to his cancellation, also left behind his ice-free rink which was utilized during the EDM finale.

Videos show the aforementioned musicians standing atop the rink, inviting fans to join in on the festivities.
Last week, Billboard reported that Coachella was “trying to make the best out of the millions of dollars spent on building a giant ice pad that was supposed to accommodate over 100 skaters during Ocean’s set last Sunday,” and that “the Goldenvoice team is working out how to incorporate it into another yet-to-be-determined performance.” The publication also shared that Ocean’s cancellation cost Goldenvoice “millions” for the ice rink and unused talent, along with $45,000 in curfew fines during his set. The first weekend would ultimately cost Goldenvoice $133,000 due to curfew violations.
Ocean said that his second weekend cancellation was due to a leg injury, also calling his first Coachella headlining show “chaotic.” Prior to his statement, two former hockey players, Dan and Chris Powers of podcast Empty Netters, discussed the scrapped ice rink performance, also claiming that the show began to fall apart days before Ocean went onstage.
“It’s not like this fell apart, and he was, ‘Oh no.’ He was actively like, ‘I don’t want to f*cking do this anymore,’” Chris said about the tension between Ocean and festival organizers. “Those figure skaters got cut not because there was an ice issue. Not because something went wrong. There was no malfunction. He was straight up like, ‘F*ck this. I’m not doing this anymore.’”
